在与拜登相关的外媒报道中，“Average Joe”常常出现在文章的标题中，诸如：

《纽约时报》：你的“邻家”美国人乔·拜登

《泰晤士报》：美国倒向“平平无奇”乔·拜登，但可能会是个激进分子

而在美剧和电影中，“Average Joe”的出镜率也非常高。难道拜登跨界了？

其实，“Average Joe”在美国指的就是“普通人，平凡的人”，相当于我们所说的“张三李四”。Urban Dictionary上的定义是：

Average Joe指普通的人，平凡的人。它是普通美国人（通常指男性）的象征。20世纪90年代晚期至21世纪初，美国人口的大部分由中产阶级构成，这一术语主要用在该阶段。
An Average Joe is an average or ordinary man. It is a symbolization of an average American person (generally male). The term was used mainly in the late 90s - early 2000s, when the majority of Americas population consisted of middle class citizens.

2020年11月，《经济学人》（The Economist）刊登了一篇文章《普通人拜登》（ Average Joe），评价了拜登的语言特点。

普通人乔·拜登：当选总统口才不好，或是个优势

和近年美国历任总统不同，拜登不仅没有美国常春藤盟校的学历文凭，连毕业时的成绩分数在班里都接近垫底。

新一届当选总统拜登、二手车销售员之子，将成为自里根以来首位没有常春藤盟校文凭的总统，而且他在特拉华大学和雪城大学法学院期间的毕业成绩几乎均在班级垫底位置。
The now-president-elect, the son of a second-hand-car salesman, will be the first president since Ronald Reagan to lack an Ivy League degree, having finished near the bottom of his class at both the University of Delaware and Syracuse University’s law school.

这样的出身和教育背景多少对拜登的语言风格和特点产生了一定的影响。总的来看，拜登的语言特点主要有下列几点：

通俗平实

拜登的语言风格通俗口语化，易理解，喜欢说“folks”（父老乡亲们）。

拜登最喜欢用的称呼语就是带着民间风味的“父老乡亲们……”。在与特朗普的第一场辩论中，他最让人难忘的发言可能就是对一直打断他的特朗普所说，“伙计，你就在这儿哇啦哇啦说个不停吧。”
His favourite vocative is the folksy "Folks...". In his first debate with Donald Trump, perhaps the most arresting thing he said was (to his constantly interrupting opponent) "Keep yappin, man."

和特朗普相比，拜登的语言甚至更为通俗易懂。

如果说五年级的学生可以理解拜登的演讲，那么能理解特朗普演讲内容的人至少得是八年级的学生了。
While Bidens speech could be understood by a fifth grader, Trumps required an eighth-grade level of education.

中性

相较而言，与奥巴马和特朗普不同，拜登的语言风格像是对二者语言特点的中和。

2008年，在获得民主党党内提名时，奥巴马表示，“子孙后代可能会将此刻记作 ‘海平面上升开始放缓，地球开始恢复的时刻’ 。” 他浮夸的言辞让大众对他的期待上升到救世主层面。
Receiving his partys nomination in 2008, Mr Obama said future generations might remember the occasion as "the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal". His high-flown rhetoric raised expectations to messianic levels.
特朗普离谱的风格十分有效。他白话的表达方式表示出他是真正的老大……执政期间，他的粗俗不堪既让一些选民望而却步，也让一些选民欣喜若狂。
Mr Trumps outrageous style was hugely effective. His vernacular delivery implied that he was a real boss... But in office his coarseness turned some voters off, even as it thrilled others.

在德国之声（Deutsche Welle）的一篇报道中，拜登的语言特点被概括为政客们常用的“木语”（wooden language）。

从许多方面来看，拜登的言语用词都是温和的。
In many ways, Joe Bidens language is bland.
法语中有个表达，“木语”，政客为了自己的声音能被更多人听到而说得无关紧要的话。这也是普罗大众所期待的：不伤害任何人的中性语言。
In French, we use the term langue du bois, wooden language, when politicians want to reach as many people as possible but what they say doesnt have much substance. This is what the moderate parts of the population expect: neutral language that doesnt hurt anyone.

嘴动得比脑子快

在之前的职业生涯里，拜登曾有过多次言语上的失态（gaffe）。

在任副总统期间，拜登曾在医改方案的签字仪式上对奥巴马耳语“这真是一件该死的大事儿”，但因站得离麦克风太近，大家都听到了。
While vice-president, he stood just a bit too close to a microphone as he said "This is a big fxxxing deal" into Mr Obamas ear at the signing ceremony for their health-care reform.

此前，他还曾要求一名坐在轮椅上的州议员站起来发言。
He once asked a wheelchair-bound state senator to stand and be recognised.
这些洋相给大众留下一种拜登动脑之前先动嘴的印象。
These bloopers give the impression of a mouth running faster than a brain.

值得一提的是，能够流利地与别人交谈并不是拜登天生就有的能力。拜登从小曾因结巴（stutter）遭人嘲笑。
